Australian LNG exports are entering a softer phase, with shipments at multi-year lows as Asian LNG demand weakens. The latest Australian LNG tracker highlights how operational constraints, falling domestic gas demand and shifting regional dynamics are reshaping Australia’s role in global LNG markets.
Australian LNG exports have fallen to their lowest levels in four years, reflecting a combination of operational outages and softer demand across key Asian markets. Northern Australia’s LNG shipments remain heavily concentrated on North Asia, but volumes to China have declined sharply, while overall Asian LNG imports have recorded their steepest half-year drop in more than a decade.
At the same time, domestic gas demand continues to fall across Australia, reinforcing the sector’s dependence on LNG exports even as volumes soften.
With renewables displacing gas in parts of Asia and domestic production declining in several markets, the tracker points to a more competitive and demand-constrained environment ahead for Australian LNG producers.
