Environmental groups have filed new litigation in the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit against the $38.7 billion, 20 million mt/year Alaska LNG project, challenging the federal evaluation of impacts on several threatened and endangered species.
This follows a climate-related lawsuit by young Alaskans and pending litigation in the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit against the US Department of Energy’s export authorization.
The Alaska LNG project aims to connect North Slope supplies via an 806-mile pipeline to an export terminal in southern Alaska.
The project promises a shorter shipping route to Asia but faces challenges in securing customers and high costs. Youth plaintiffs argue the project will exacerbate climate pollution, while Alaska Gasline Development Corp. defends its environmental and economic benefits.
