Brazil’s gas-fired power generation surged by near 600% since mid-June amidst dwindling hydro output, as the country’s is facing another historic drought.
Brazil’s hydro power generation plummeted by near 40% since early March. According to the country’s Center for Natural Disasters, Brazil is facing its worst drought since at least 1950. Water levels at Amazon ports hit their lowest levels since 1902.
In this context, gas-fired power plants played a key role in providing back-up to the power system and ensuring electricity supply security.
Brazil’s gas-fired powergen surged by near 600% since mid-June. Most of the incremental gas demand was met via LNG imports, which doubled since June and reached 0.56 bcm in Sep24 – their highest level since Jan22.
What is your view? Are droughts in South America becoming more extreme? How will this impact Brazil’s hydro generation? Scientists predict that the Amazon region might not recover moisture levels until 2026… What would be the impact on gas-fired powergen?
